"Minnie The Moocher" is our (KS & AV) second show together. First being, "*tastes self*" at Hell Gallery 2009.

MtM was Held at WESTWING, part of Westspace gallery. Located in Melbourne Central, running for 10 or so days..........

Sculptures/ paintings in clusters but singled out as lone objects. Kate: Clay, painted, in a blob, painted, seemingly stood over?; packing matter dipped in a thick pinkish paint… almost purple; Glove/ a hand filled with a heavy substance. Many of these objects lean towards a "gestural" side. Skirting towards ideas of fashion - or not fashion, bodily parts - arms, legs. But more of a indication - or offering towards.........

Alex: Segments of clothing submerged in water; Vases placed upon one another filled with water of different colours, shades, etc etc. Blue to light blue, purple to rose, Red to -again- purple…; Yellow motorcycle jacket thrown on floor, "David" bust on plinth.

Objects almost appear as an act or motion towards movement, a symbolic gesture, wave, indication...

Sometimes these tags delve more into the realms of poetry. Good Poetry is mostly fluid and off the top of the head anyway so I guess a lot of poetry would be graffiti if only it was approached with spray paint and a wall instead of a pen and paper or computer.

Motorcycle Exhaust - what is an image? How do we farm, or manufacture our thoughts (i.e. stature) ?

There are towels thrown over a room. Wet towels abandoned in a mound and left to dry. When solid can be moved around as hard matter or new objects with a different purpose…… or no purpose, or weight carriers. Empty… hollow… nothing… but heavy enough and solid like a rock or cinder block. Blocks are stacked to make walls or to divide space, create boundaries. The same is done with old matter - be it discarded food, tired moist clothing…

The heaviness behind a stench commands spaces we weave over/ around/ away from. Nobody stands in front of a Kawasaki exhaust, they walk around it. Nobody stands underneath a pile of blocks or bricks or rocks, they walk around or travel over it. Stench creates important territories that are "uncharted" or unachievable destinations.

Nobody builds on flood plain/ plane. Maybe they should?

Documentation is so heavily doctored that it's never actually true or realistic either. Something is always left out or over compitsated for. All the ugly things are discarded so everything appears better. All the ugly things are accentuated so you have feelings of sympathy.

Everybody cries when they are bombarded with the image of many hideous animals who've been spruced up with bows or bleached teeth or backpacks and oversized reflective glasses. People run screaming when confronted with the responsibility of a an oversized/ bewildered cow. So gummy.

There is a woman throwing her hair back and forth in front of a corrugated iron fence. She is standing on a collection of dried towels in the shape of. Slowly the shape breaks and loosens and moves back into what it was in the first place, a pile of towels. Slowly other people walk around or congregate and the towels are pushed and singled out or kicked (sometimes accidentally sometimes not) around the room. This kind of resembles that of a bathroom/ towelling "showroom" or like a prop to a movie. Although mostly accidental, things appear contrived because there was always some particular point where everything looked perfect and then someone went "too far."

"About the baths - especially the club baths, where I used to go all the time: The club baths weren't really private clubs. Anyone who could pay for a locker belonged. So they had Buddy Nights on Monday and Friday, which meant that two people could get in for the price of one. people would line up outside, and you could just meet someone on the line and say you were their buddy, and by the time you got to the window, you paid a single admission. you didn't necessarily have to stick to the guy you walked in with. What it meant was that for five bucks you could go inside, walk around wearing a towel, and meet anyone you wanted.

The more I went to the baths, the more I preferred this atmosphere to cruising scenes at the bars. First of all, everyone at the baths was sort of on an equal level. I mean, everyone was just wearing a towel, so you werent judged by what you were wearing, and there would not be the same attitude you encountered at the bars. The point is, all class distinctions were gone. You were a common, united, connected group of people. And I liked that situation. And it seemed I did better cruising people without clothes than with clothes! Also, in the baths, it was a totally unrealistic situation. When you left that unreal part of you there - it didn't have to be with you all the time. So I preferred the baths more and more."

Shoes, shopping, shopping wherever and whenever. SLIMED, slimed with an existance of BAD BREATH. But what is bad and what is good? (check out TCB writing....) How did we start knowing that shit smells bad and the yellow rose smells sweet? Sometimes things are so nasty smelling and rich that a horridness can be cancelled out and it all turns to sweet. So much noise, such an intense high frequency, there is nothing to decifer but RINGING. After a while, you get used to it and then start enjoying it because everything truely juicy should be loathed in some way or another in the beginning. This is by means of jealousy or non understanding or just plain HATRED (change word)

Theres posters on tree stumps, chains hanging from branches. The skinhead iconography is used as a horny trade off. Mostly all you see is brick wall, an unfinished dump facade, graffitii all over the walls, motorcycle accessories that serve as another shield for anonyminity. Obviously somebody has tried to create a space inside a space inside a space outdoors. Obviously there are boundaries to where this begins and ends but with the reality given from C to GG and GG to C, the lines are blurred. Who is real who is fake?

Proposal written for "STENCH IN NUMBERS" show, July 2009.

I also wanted to explore ideas of what kind of stench passable and what is just gross? and who decides this? It seems that stench for myself has equalled a life time commitment. You become 'known' for being dirty and gross and are treated differently or almost looked down upon. It seems lazy or as if you just dont care which is totally untrue.

I have learnt that certain things like breath and piss is unacceptable for social commitments and or standings. A certain 'male stench' seems acceptable but then why isnt something like the smell of urine not? Urine seems as much of waste as is body odour and general sweat. When i think of Men I think of BOTH body odour and piss and am impressed when somebody else can hold a stench in a social atmosphere.

I am interested in the body as a vessel that is able to maintain itself, certain stenches cancelling out eachother and creating a new mix. The body cleans itself, perhaps not to an aloe vera or dove soap level but it creates an own personal identity and i think this is an important idea and i will attempt to address these ideas within STENCH IN NUMBERS.

The vessel is a container, not like a tupperware thing but more of a weight, statue esque and with huge girth, swallowing - almost - the whole of the room. The Vessel is a breather, do-er, blind fold, empty sauce container. The Vessel is not morphing from one station to another but is merely wading through all ideas, all at once. Sometimes this can mean an innevidible strength but at other times is confusing or darting experience and most can melt into nothing again. Meltin' Melissa, melting moment, melting dripping gooey aesthetic, candle all done on an alcohol bottle like 2, 3, 4, 5 etc etc etc times. There is a comic book shop, the shop is connected to someting, not like the fittings, but the vessel in an (often) busy area. Comic book shops probably wouldnt work that well in a really unbusy area like a really small town. (Like there was a cbs where i was growing up in the country but my area had a regional population of around 100 thousand.)

Slob is in an empty bathtub surrouned by kettle chips, cigarettes, flame pipe, machine gun etc etc tec, emptiness is an idea in a shell, or case of chips or cigarettes or flame pipes and so on etc etc etc etc etc. "live and let die" on a bedroom flag or on a patch on a jacket on the floor or strewn over chairs, oil drums, chains from the ceiling and blank walls. This is all displayed in the vessel or container or space inside as aboved mentioned brick wall boundary idea. Mostly everything is strong coloured or drab in it's appearance with greenish black and faded spots. Dull lifeless colouring stinks and makes up for the lack of colour hues over the presence behind the stench, the two ideas become less apparent and are no longer viewed as completely different objects but that of a general idea......

Body heat and bad breath has killed the paintings of the Ancients. A black fungus moves in growing spots and swarms towards the bulls, bison and duck billed men of old. Mould lives in the soil here. It crept into cheese and now lives in the handbags of rich old ladies. He kicks the dirt and wonders why there is no skatepark in his town. A toenail is missing from his left foot and his socks are squeaking in his shoes. He hasn't shit in over a week and has been living on cheese and bread alone. Heading home he is greeted by the familiar vomit smell at the front door and an old yoghurt cook book open inside on the desk. Its more like the entrance to a medieval cave than a room. The ends of bread sticks lie mouldy green on the floor amongst a hundred tissues, crumpled and stained. Comic books and socks are strewn around crushed by broken and discarded shoes. The stench of butyric acid is thick and salty in the damp air. UV light shone into this room would illuminate a thousand stains like the blood splatter patterns of a crushed skull. A sock squelches underfoot and a creamy mixture oozes from the open end. White, crumbly and slightly moist it resembles a wooly enchilada. He picks it up and the mixture drips to the floor. Sniffing it creates sharp waves of nausea like the waft lines of smell in a comic frame. He drops it and strips off his clothes.

Lying down he stares at the ceiling. He stares and dreams of a new comic. A comic of an army of crawling socks. The socks gain power from odour and vomit a white milky substance on their victims. They seek out the diseased feet of teenage skateboarders and homeless and slide onto their feet at night to recharge. If weak they congregate together into huge piles that fester with tinea and share the fungus between them. Nah, its fucken stupid he thinks and slowly starts to masturbate while dreaming of something else. His little teenage girlfriend has just left him. She used to love the smell of his feet and socks. it would turn her on. The worse he smelt the more she wanted to play with herself lying back on his putrid floor. Her favourite song was LINGER by the Cranberries and her favourite band was the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. She had a big poster of them with their socks on their cocks. He drifts asleep with his dick in his hand, still stiff like the shaft of a dead man.

There he is lying in his own filth. His room like an open petri dish. Yet his place is assured amongst the Ancients. Amongst the Armenian women who migrated the earth with glass jars of yoghurt culture. Amongst the soil culture of the Roquefort caves. Amongst the higher class with their bottles of musk and ambergris. He is of the same age as the four teenagers who fell through a hole in the ground to find the wall paintings of the Ancients. They were chasing their dog, Robot, and running in the wild, before a hole in the ground had opened up before them crashed through by a fallen tree. They found the The Great Hall of the Bulls, the Lateral Passage, the Shaft of the Dead Man and the Chamber of Engravings. So it is with our hero, scrambling in his own culture, running in the wild of his times he will crash through a wormhole of his own and into the new Chamber of Engravings and stare with fresh wonder -

He opens his eyes and slides from his floor, roughly mopping his chest with an old t-shirt. A bowl of cheap cereal lies near him and he picks it up to eat the soggy Crunch. This was the inspiration for the flavour of CapN Crunch cereal. I recently took part in the y3k exhbition at the Structural Integrity Next Wave Festival, Melbourne (May 2010).

Synposis of project (not written by self): Exploring independent arts cultures from across Australia and Asia, Structural Integrity includes the work of six Australian and five Asian Galleries. The exhibition will be open every day of the Festival, and is Next Wave’s biggest and most ambitious engagement with the Asia-Pacific region in the Festival’s 25-year history.

Working on-site at the Meat Market in the month leading up to the Festival, each artist group will create a large-scale structure, or ‘pavilion’, inside this vast historical building.

Y3K presents an architectural structure of no-structure to establish and define a space-exhisting-within a space. Involving work from Tahi Moore, Joshua Petherick, Lizzy Newman , Nick Mangan, f f I X X e d, Fiona Connor, Free School, Alex Vivian, A Constructed World, SPEECH and What Archive?, ames Deutsher and Christopher L G Hill. With Freshly released publications from Fiona Connor + Kate Newby + Simon Denny, Y3K and Free School.

faces are the first thing we see when we look up. sometimes they are muffled or hidden or camoflagued. Mostly faces are seen in the dark or in passing. Most faces look familiar, smokin, or like an uglier/less charasmatic version of a more interesting appearing person. Some people look like cartoon characters i watch on tv or see in comics. Theres this older guy who totally resembles asterix that i pass almost every day. My grandfather looked exactly like Mickey rooney, my mother told me I used to look like sylvester stalone when i was younger etc etc etc etc Sometimes these faces are people youve had relations with before, people who have watched you, passed on dieseases, pissed inside you, ruined your life, eaten you out at knifepoint etc etc etc. other times theyre just new meat, empty holes, rimmed glasses and a hat and some sweet tshirt.

Odour = lifetime commitment, as does childbirth or deciding to own a pet. To become rotten or succumb to your own stench is not only a reality alot of people refuse to belong to, but is looked upon as being "unacceptable". COME ON, youre getting older, youre not so young anymore.... Do something about it...

Rotten existence breeds rotten outcomes and I firmly think in this case, ROTTEN = RICH. The deepest, richest existence.... marinated and preserved in what can only be the most readily available, your own stench. If youre not going o deal with it who else will? You might as well celebrate it. Well not celebrate, that almost sounds comedic or something, but I do think one should endorse, live with.... you know, deal...... Others will understand through confidence and stench will provide certainty, familiarity, strength. STENCH is not about an actual smell, but more of S.O.M (stayghtee of mynd). Vacating a room and leaving behind your presence is like a peek inside someones insides. Like sticking your head inside someones arsehole just to smell or experience, a fantasy explored in the dennis cooper book i think its called TRY. the one with the windmill chapter.
